2009 ACSA/AISC Steel Competition

Culturally viewed with a negative connotation, the auto recycling industry is one of the most sustainable industries in the United States. Located in the heavily industrial city of Sun Valley, California, Pick Your Part is an auto recycling facility serving the northern parts of Los Angeles County. The city of Sun Valley is zoned as more than 50% industrial, and with this site canvassed by concrete and steel, the site contributes greatly to the heat island effect plaguing Los Angeles. This institute is aimed at providing a research and educational facility where the public can learn about the benefits of auto recycling from experts who research and conduct test on site. Located above a junkyard is the perfect location for such a facility, as the public can watch the recycling process while learning about future technologies and recycling methods.

The population of cars in the United States is expected to be 1 billion in the year 2050, a 400% increase over 2008 statistics. In response to this, the institute is elevated four times above the current car height to represent the projected increase in cars that will end up at the junkyard in 42 years. Using the existing vehicle crusher / compactor on site as a focal point for an educational experience, the structure bends around the crusher so that visitors can experience the heart of the junkyard from a safe distance.
