JJ was born on the east coast of South Africa in the city of Durban. He is the son of a retired police detective and a school teacher. As a teenager his years were influenced by skateboarding and punk rock music and both sub-cultures still form part of who he is today and have become the roots of his photography style. His photographs are very simple and raw as he always aims to capture the honesty of each moment.
