Hello, firstly I'd like to thank you for visiting my page. All the works in the main project galleries are hand drawn in coloured pencil with fine black pen for the outlines and I try to do on average one a month. I think that's all I need to say about the technical aspect of how they're done. I'll start with a very rough sketch to give me an idea of composition and interpret that as I go along. The final pieces, especially the details are invented as I go. I spent years working in the special effects industry, dealing mainly in animatronic design and building, most notably at Jim henson's Creature Shop in London where I loved all aspects of the job apart from when for whatever reason things had to be done twice. This has carried over into my art where once I've started a piece there's no going back. I don't do a coloured rough or anything as sensible, I just dive headfirst into it. I like to describe my art as a sort of elaborate freestyle.
One of the main inspirations for the actual style of the drawings comes from the aesthetics of the mechanics used in animatronics. The skeletons of these ingenious puppets are often works of art in themselves, beautifully built by incredibly skilled technicians. I often thought it was a shame to cover them up. That's where the stylised skeletal engineered look comes from.
Because of the unplanned nature of the work, they represent to me a certain artistic freedom. This notion of freedom is very important to me, I like the idea of heading off without a plan and just seeing what happens, not just in art but in everything to a degree. I've often been very pleasantly surprised by what's been waiting just around the corner and I enjoy not knowing what lies ahead. These notions of spontineity or fortuitousness I like to carry from life into my art.
I'm a very strong believer in aesthetics alone being a most noble reason for creating art. I want to produce something that I think is beautiful. I know this is very subjective what with beauty being in the eye of the beholder etc. etc. but most of my favourite art makes me go wow! as soon as I see it. The first art that really turned my head was "The Butterfly Ball" illustrated by Alan Aldridge - well worth a google if you don't know it. It's sense of detail and the beautiful composition of the plates never left me. Graffiti art did the same to me when I first saw it in the 80's, it was art that actually got me excited! It did have a message - "HERE I AM!" but it was the look of it that got me. (I ought to mention that I was a graffiti artist for years and that I still indulge from time to time often on a professional basis, in fact it's taken me to some amazing places). However it's in the work on this site where my heart lies most and I hope you enjoy it. I don't know if it's for everybody but it's definitely for anybody.
