Gitans

Gitans is a compilation of four short films created by young gypsies in Lézignan-Corbières, southern France. The project took place in weekly sessions over one year project and engaged working young people with learning difficulties and behavioural problems. Voices from the Steppe

Voices From the Steppe' was made during a Participatory Video project with semi-nomadic shepherds in Kazakhstan as part of the multidisciplinary DARCA (Desertification and Regeneration in Central Asia) programme. InsightShare worked alongside a multidisciplinary team of scientists studying the environmental impacts of current grazing practices on semi–arid Central Asian rangelands. Our Participatory Video methods complimented and enhanced other more traditional forms of data collection such as remote sensing, pasture analysis and herd monitoring. The DARCA programme was unded by the European Union under the Copernicus programme, coordinated by Macaulay Institute, Aberdeen.

Partnerships are key to progress

Top down solutions are not going to work and no single actor can solve the problems of forest management on their own. Partnerships where everyone is working together towards a common goal are critical to progress. But partnerships, just like human relationships, have to be worked on constantly if they are to succeed. And any partnership has to involve the local community who need to own any initiatives aimed at managing the forest. This is one of the Canopy of Friends video clips, created under the Growing Forest Partnership (GFP) initiative, aiming to stimulate debate on new ways to manage the world's forests.

Forests and climate change

Forests will play a major role in fighting climate change but there are many opinions on what that role should be. Should they be seen as carbon repositories, intact ecosystems, stocks of renewable bio-energy? Should the North be paying for reforestation as part of its ecological debt to the South? Defining that role and the human/forest interaction will be critical. This is one of the Canopy of Friends video clips, created under the Growing Forest Partnership (GFP) initiative, aiming to stimulate debate on new ways to manage the world's forests.

Integrated forest management is critical to delivering equity

Forests are major resources that can bring benefits to all if properly managed. Equitable management involves all levels of society from the international level, where dialogue can be facilitated, through local governments who have to regulate, down to the indigenous peoples who must be involved in decision-making about, and management of, the forests. Commercial partnerships to exploit forest resources can be implemented, but the money generated has to benefit the community too. Taking the community approach to forest management in Guatemala

Guatemalans talk about the community approach to forestry in their country. Small enterprises take holistic approaches to using the forest for food production. They argue that community-managed forests are the ones that survive and prosper as the people who benefit from them are looking after them. But some Western technical knowledge has to be grafted onto traditional systems for the best outcomes. Is the market the answer for forests?

Supporters and opponents of market-based mechanisms for conserving forests put their arguments. Should there be payments for reducing deforestation, conserving bio-diversity? Or do these build in perverse incentives to degrade first in order to profit later? Are the new carbon trading markets the friend or the foe of forests and the people who rely on them? Finally, how can the UN's REDD programme help? This is one of the Canopy of Friends video clips, created under the Growing Forest Partnership (GFP) initiative, aiming to stimulate debate on new ways to manage the world's forests.

The small business approach to forest management in Mozambique

Mozambicans talk about the role that small businesses can take in protecting forests. Charcoal makers conserve tree stocks to ensure that they can be in business tomorrow; growers of medicinal plants export to South Africa and the value of this trade ensures that they protect their resource. But there are also illegal operators and regulation of business is an issue for both central and local government. This is one of the Canopy of Friends video clips, created under the Growing Forest Partnership (GFP) initiative, aiming to stimulate debate on new ways to manage the world's forests.

Peace Within

Kevin used to be very proud and fought not only on the pitch but would also even contest referees' decision and throw their red cards back at them. His life became even more difficult during the post-election violence when his father lost his job. The hardship he experienced during the conflict led him to hate Kikuyus. He used to hate them so much that when one passed by him he could spit. He could not even ask for a pass from a Kikuyu while playing football.

The Peace Curriculum through LEAP SPORT programme was introduced it has helped him work on his pride and can now relate well with other people in the community. He doesn't mind playing with Kikuyus now and can ask them to pass the ball.

Diffa; Les premiers matins du monde

The ancient tradition of pastoral nomadism in landlocked Niger in West Africa is a source of huge cultural wealth in one of the poorest countries on earth. But with Niger's eastern reaches suffering 35 years of drought — an entire generation's worth — local pastoralists have faced a massive challenge. Diffa, les premiers matins du monde tells the stories of many of these pastoralists and how they have coped.
