A construction professional and President of Sargent Corporation in Stillwater, Maine, Herbert R. Sargent started his career in the family business at age 16, working in construction during the summer at his family's construction company. A graduate of Hampden Academy, he played varsity football and baseball during high school. After finishing high school and doing jobs outside his family’s business for a few years, Herbert R. Sargent made the decision to work full time at his grandfather’s heavy construction company in 1983.
Starting as a general laborer, he worked his way up to the foreman position. His family’s professional presence in the region became clear when Mr. Sargent managed the reconstruction of a road his grandfather built in the 1930s. This was his first project as superintendent. He started his own company, originally known as Sargent & Sargent, in 1991. In 2005, he bought back his family's former business, H.E. Sargent, which had been purchased by a Paris, France, firm, merging it with his company. He renamed the merged companies the Sargent Corporation.
