I grew up in Northwest Indiana, in the thick of the National Lakeshore. A landscape where steel coil rattles past cattail. Where buzzing marsh hugs fern and forest. Where blast furnace shadows dune and driftwood. The smell of sulphur and fish wafting through an open bedroom window on a late-July breeze. Just inside, you could find me lost in Dali, Magritte, and Escher; or flipping through my dad’s Pink Floyd LPs with Storm Thorgerson’s enigmatic covers. The discman would probably be spinning Rush or early Genesis or U2‘s "Achtung Baby" (“Time is a train – makes the future the past...”).

I get now why this stuff clicked with me. These artists (storytellers, really) had the ability to intertwine technical virtuosity with emotional sensitivity, often in weird ways. Ways that colored outside the lines no matter how unhip. It wasn’t pretense, it was passion – aimed straight at the head and heart. And it became a catalyst for a career.

I studied art and design at the Maryland Institute College of Art then spent the next thirteen years working in the Chicago area as a member of Studio Blue; as a full-time dad and freelancer; and as a designer with VSA Partners. In that time, I had the opportunity to create work for a diverse range of clients including museums and cultural organizations, educational institutions, economic markets, retail and corporate brands, and even a major league baseball team.

My work has been recognized by the AIGA, Type Director’s Club, Society of Publication Designers, Print, STEP, and I.D. magazines, and is part of the permanent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Today I live in Valparaiso, Indiana. The landscape out our window is a bit more corn field than cattail; but on clear days you can still catch sight of the lakeside steel mills to the north. And it looks like home. Read Less
