Following 15 years as a designer/craftsman making high-quality contemporary furniture, Guy Lewis turned his attention to sculpture, initially as a way of exploring new techniques and ideas. It quickly became his main focus. ‘Each sculpture is unique; I don't make "Editions". Even if the mold is used more than once, I will shape the casting differently or perhaps use multiple pieces to achieve the result I have in mind.’

Guy particularly enjoys creating pieces featuring plywood trees. ‘A lot of work goes into making these pieces. The "trees" are made of birch plywood interleaved with dyed maple veneers or solid exotic timbers such as rosewood, bubinga and rippled-sycamore. Techniques used in their construction include laminating, veneering, carving, turning and casting. These are the sculptures that are most personal to me.’ Guy is fascinated by wood and its many different properties. Having worked with it conventionally for many years, he now seeks ways to uncover aspects that are not immediately obvious. For instance the resin pieces sometimes contain no wood whatsoever and whilst having refined clean lines, started life as a natural, unprocessed, unadorned block of gnarly old wood.

Guy’s work reflects his background in making fine furniture. His objects offer the viewer an opportunity to appreciate the materials he uses and the way he uses them. The end result is balanced, harmonious and as perfect as this gifted maker can make it. Guy aims for a sense of ‘ordered calm’ in his work. Read Less
