Design Concept

±ype is a project which demonstrates the notion of deconstructing typefaces as a methodology to create interesting typographic outcomes. It uses the approach of Chaos theory to deconstruct and infuse disorder within conventional typefaces to break type conventions.

Commonly known as a random state of disorder, the term Chaos is applied to a subject when a simple computation or change from its initial conditions produced vast results. Applying this theory to the context of type design, this project seeks deconstruct types through random disorder to generate new hybrid forms of type and inspire designers with new insights towards the design process of type.

Logo

The conception of the logo was to portray the project’s core of experimenting with types. Its symbolism, denoted by “+” and “-” represents the methodology of construction and deconstruction to challenge type conventions. “+” was also used as a replacement for “t” which formed the word “type” to better communicate the project’s intentions, while yellow was used to stimulate mental ability.

Website

The idea of the website was to contain each individual experimented type in a clean, sleek, and accessible manner. Inspired by the cubic forms of the modular typeface, Infini, the website adopted the use of cubes as its main design concept. Each experimentation represented by a cube was numbered and complemented with an hovering effect to enhance its user interactivity.
