The process of transforming a piece of clay into an object that carries meaning is engaging. At times, working with clay provides a visual language to explore questions about life and society. Other times, sculptures are created from the simple pleasure of exploring a form and capturing the beauty and (im)perfections of Nature.
Traveling and outdoor excursions are always great sources of inspiration. Often the beginnings of a vessel or sculpture emerge from the discovery an intriguing geological formation, the organic outline of a sea anemone, or the subtle mood expressed by a human figure. I take pictures and notes, and later, ideas are drawn into sketches. The building process is often organic and the piece reveals itself as I collaborate with the clay. Read Less
