The proposed siting for Paraoa's Ribcage is Department of Conservation’s Ngapotiki reserve on the Wairarapa’s wild and rugged coast. Resembling the remains of a beached whale’s ribcage, Paraoa’s Ribcage presents an architectural solution in the form of a semi-permanent structure for the luxury-camping market. Repeated framing elements set at even intervals connect to produce a triangulated structure that is then lined with heavy duty weatherproof canvas. At both ends segmented trap doors seal the structure to form the interior, providing a place of comfort and shelter. Alternatively they open out to create an outdoor decking area, revealing vast open views of the coastal landscape. Constructed from Accoya Timber ,the structure withstands the elements at this harsh coastal environment. Custom-designed detailing allows the structure to be disassembled and transported easily.
Whether present for a long or short time, Paraoa’s Bones gifts a sensitively designed, visually appropriate new element to the unique landscape. Read Less
