in progress... chronicling the delicacies of disturbance
It’s a very humbling and liberating thing to realize

that the forest holds endless lessons for me.
The big trees have been my hide-and-seek and my church;
I’ve taught field school in the woods, and
from the University where I now work I can close my eyes
and hear the ground at different seasons on the redwood trail, or
smell the air as elevations change along the river’s edge.

Nothing prepared me for what the Sol Duc had to teach me
of the salmon-cedar connection.

Of Fin & Forest is a reflection of place –
of integrity that grows from below & above.
Never again will I hike in a forest,
old-growth or otherwise,
without reading the structure, considering the age, and
predicting the disturbance from which mosaic emerges...
                                                                      old growth mosaic

a matter of scale

the forest mosaic- it's complexity, it's magic
vertically & horizontally-
is driven by disturbance

natural disturbance leaves in its wake a structure
that provides habitat for secondary cavity dwellers...
