These photos try to bend reality just a little bit, to portray something beautiful or joyful even in the darkness, what I’m calling – lightness. Even when there are distortions and/or selected elements of painting – irregularities, textures, shadows, patterns – the light shines through.
And in a way, this set of pictures also tells the story of coming out of the dark, as the images become less infused with shadows, until they are practically all-light.
My background is journalism, which trained me to look for what’s “real” and to always be looking for stories and narratives. But as an artist and human being, I find myself being very quiet with my camera eye and not so preoccupied with the words/interpretations/alerts that come with story. I don't for example really like to title my work, but would rather you just see what you want to see.
That said, I admit that I do want to show you, to convince you of something. And it's this – that the world is beautiful. We are told so often that this is not so. But I think we must remember how to be happy and whole, we must train our eyes to see beauty – everywhere. Anyone can do this.
My larger message is simply that whatever you do, that you try to find create joy in the world.
