A summary of internet's electricity need
The project started with a walk of little steps through the forest of server infrastructure, big data and nuclear power stations. It continued with forming an estimate of electricity used by the world wide web. Our calculation is based on a comparison of company, ministry and science reports from leading industry nations like USA or Germany. After researching content, we designed a storyline that brings up examples to get a feeling of what we spend while surfing the web. The final double page is part of an infographic series at „Terra Mater“ magazine.

The four major parts of this graphic are the nuclear power stations which are necessary to run the web, How much Energy is used by servers in Germany, the google power consumption at the bottom and email and spam relations on the right.
It was especially time consuming this time to get together all different prediction about energy consumption of servers and email traffic. Even as we had to rely on sugarcoated informations delivered by big companies, the amounts are really awesome. The real amounts might be much bigger in fact...
