  • Gaps: Bangkok 2011-12
    the transcripts of emergence

  • I wrote an entire essay on the existence of gaps in our society and in architecture. I also argue that in order to deal with gaps architects need to emerge themselves within gaps. This project begins to interpret various typologies of gap which I have encountered during my time in this city. Gaps varying from perceptional, fiction, imagined or physical, and once collected become a simple record of my overall experience in Bangkok/

  • BUS
1- SRINAKARIN BUS, BACK SEAT VIEW
    2- THE PLAN
3- 3 BUSES TO ONE DESTINATION

BEFORE JOINING THE RANKS OF COMMUTERS, BUSES WERE INVISIBLE OR SINGLE UNITS MOVING PAST ME ON A ROAD. ONCE THE BUS BECOMES THE MODE OF TRANSPORT YOU RELY ON THEY COME IN SETS AND COMBINATIONS WHICH NEED TO BE APPLIED IN VARIOUS WAYS ACCORDING TO MY LOCATION AND DESTINATION.
  • BUS STOP
1- LAD PRAO RD INFORMAL BUS STOP
    2- PLAN OF BUS STOP
3- INFORMER OF BUS STOP GATHERINGS

BUS STOPS IN THAILAND ARE COMPLETE SEPERATE ENTITIES FROM THE STRUCTURE THEMSELVES. THEY ARE SHAPED BY MOVEMTN OF THE SUN, RAINFALL, URGENCY TO GET TO WORK AND OTHER MORE DIRECTIONAL ASPECT. THE STATIC MODEL OF THE BUS STOP NEEDS TO BE CHALLENGED IN URBAN DESIGN.
  • PAVEMENT
1- PAVEMENT SOMEWHERE IN BANGKOK - CONDITION STABLE
    2- APPEARANCE
    3- UNDERGROUND WELL RIPPLES

MUCH LIKE THE GRASSES OF BANGKOK, THE PAVEMENT PRESENT SIMILAR POSSIBILITES OF THE MYSTERIOUS 'SUBTERRANEAN' NOTION. DURING THE RAINY SEASON THE STABILITY OF PAVEMENTS VANISHES, WALKING THROUGH THE CITY TAKES LONGER AS EVERYONE BECOMES MORE CAUTIOUS. A GAME OF MINESWEEPER AT PLAY ON THE CITY STREETS.
  • GRASS
    1- LUMPHINI PARK GRASS
    2- SURFACE SOLIDITY PERCEPTION
    3- UNDERLYING MASS

I HAVE AN IRRATIONAL FEAR OF FALLING THROUGH THE EARTH. IN COMPARISON TO SOUTH AFRICAN SOILS, HARD RED AND DUST, THAILAND HAS THE OPPOSITE. MOIST, DARK AND FLESHY, EVERY STEP CAUSES THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH TO SWEEL SLIGHTLY AS IF THE GROUND IS TRYING TO SUCK YOU IN. THIS MOMENTARY SEAL BETWEEN MYSELF AND THE EARTH LEADS MY MIND TO IMAGINE THE INFINITE UNDERLYING MASSES BELOW.
  • MARKET
1- TALAT SWUAN LUANG / RAMA 9 PARK MARKET: FISH SECTION
    2- PLAN
    3- SPATIAL SECTION

WESTERN SOCIETY BELIEVES THE MALL IS THERE TO SERVE ITS EVERY NEED. THE MARKET IS THERE FOR THE TRADER TO MAKE HIS LIVING WITH THE MEANS AVAILABLE TO HIM/HER. THE CONSUMER IS A PART OF THIS RELATIONSHIP BUT SPATIAL ORGANISATIONS TEND TO REVEAL THE CONSUMER AS THE OUTSIDER.

  • BRIDGE
1- SRINAKRIN LASALL INTERSECTION FLYOVER BRIDGE
    2- SECTION
3- REVERBERATIONS OF ENERGIES AND OTHER POTENTIALS

THIS IS A PHYSICAL GAP, BUT AFTER READING SO MANY MURUKAMI NOVELS, I CAN NEVER HELP BUT TO WRITE A SHORT STORY IMAGINING THE ABSURD REASONS WHY I SOMETIME SEE A PERSON COMING FROM BELOW THEM OR WHY CERTAIN PEOPLE LIVE BELOW THEM. WRITING STORIES ABOUT THESE INFRASTRUCTURAL VOIDS HELPS UNDERSTAND THEIR MYSTERIOUS FUNCTIONAL BEAUTY.

  • SEWERS, RIVERS, PILE FOUNDATIONS, 'AIRCON' AND BATHROOM WASHROOMS.

The section callout of various cultural signifiers relevant to the city of Bangkok have been a slow realisation. Using Autocad as a medium, I attemppt to create art from the draughting tool of architects, using CAD blocks and line weights as drawing signifiers.
