the installation uses set of techniques for surface modeling in Maya that satisfies an outlined aesthetic criteria and to explore the capabilities and limitations of the five axis KUKA robot. through the use of a 5 axis mill, the fabrication process is not limited to milling from a single vertical projection, therefore forms that billow, curl, and fold over themselves and able to be fabricated. the seven-foot-tall spiraling vortex, attempts to exploit all of the motion capabilities of the robot along a single continuous, variably thick line. the vortex terminates with two openings that connect two sides of the surface; each portion milled by projection cuts from two sides that are choreographed into one uninterrupted motion path. partner: cody davis
