event: La Gran Limpieza, The Great LA River CleanUp

I went back to the LA River Basin again, this time as part of the volunteers cleaning the river for the 24th annual Friends of the Los Angeles River Great Clean-Up - La Gran Limpieza. I signed up for the Bow Tie Parcel that's south of the Fletcher overpass and Glendale Blvd. It was a great event but also a heavy reminder of how carless we are with our home.
Washingtonia or Mexican Fan Palm.
It would be amazing to see the network of storm drain tunnels but I don't think I have the guts to get much past the mouth of this beast.
I've yet to find out what these are but they were amazing blooms.
Facing south.
Appeared to be an Oil Derrick turned homeless shelter.
There are stunning Nerium oleander blooms all along the riverbed.
Ricinus communis or Castor Oil
It's a bit funny to consider the purpose of this object and then reconcile that with it's condition and location now. There's a larger metaphor in there but I'm not feeling verbose enough to really do it justice.
It was nearly impossible to clean all the debris out - years of it being wrapped around limbs and trunks during high-water weather has made massive tangles of reeds, dried algae and of course plastic.
The photo does not do the color of this tree justice. It smelled like eucalyptus but I've yet to confirm what they were.
The main section of the Bow Tie parcel. Once home to much heavier commercial and industrial activity but surprisingly lush in spots.
