During the summer of 2009 I redesign and rewrote the eThemes application that had been developed in 2003 for the eMints program. Originally written in Java and backed by Oracle my rewrite uses Ruby on Rails and MySQL to power the application.
eThemes provides teachers with links to kid-safe online resources centered around a theme. For instance a teacher how wants to teach a lesson on owls could use eThemes to find a curated collection of links about owls that have been reviewed for content and audience appropriateness.
The application includes a robust administration interface that allows multiple works, called scouts, to create themes and curate links. The application also runs a link checking script to look for broken or redirected links and provides scouts with an easy way to update or remove the offending links.
