Dionysus and the birth of creativity
One of the largest and most wide ranging cults was centered on the God Dionysus. Born of a tryst between Zeus and a mortal woman named Semele, Dionysus was protected from Hera by being sewn inside the god’s leg until he fully matured. Raised by nymphs, Dionysus later roamed the world in search of tributes due him, spending long periods in Egypt, along the Black sea and in Anatolia where his myth and worship flourished. The connection between the cult ofDionysus and the creative spirit that fed into his myth and culture continues to resonate in aspects of artistic conception today.
