During the 2013 Woordfees festival, five writers, a photographer and numerous filmmakers each made a city portrait of Stellenbosch: a small South African university city in the heart of the Western Cape’s Wineland municipality. Providing the visual components for this edition of citybooks I produced a series of 24 pictures depicting the nightly streets of Stellenbosch.
As a photographer, I joined a group of private security officers. I was interested in what happens on the nightly streets of Stellenbosch. Depicting their work on the streets, I hoped to show something of the town’s everyday life and its seclusion and isolation. Strolling mostly at night trough the town, I came across many people for whom the streets became a habitat, such as homeless people and car guards. Altogether, the pictures in “Nighthawks” shed light on the “every-night” of Stellenbosch.
