This is my entry for Bench - Remembering the National Stadium

bench.

bench. is a bench that is constructed of out the wood salvaged from the benches of the Old National Stadium, bonded seamlessly with adhesive. The weathered texture of the wood on the top surface is retained to preserve a tangible part of history for future generations to feel, as well as an attempt to preserve 37 years of service of to the occupants of the Old National Stadium, and now in the form of a public bench, enabling it to continue its service discretely.

I was questioned several times why I submitted such a simple/basic bench. To be honest, I was just trying my best to answer to the brief. I lay out several criteria for myself based on my interpretation of the brief and they are as listed below:

- Avoid crevices for cigarette butts and rubbish
- Structural Integrity
- Ease of production
- Avoiding the introduction of other materials

On the other hand, I decided that the weathered surface of the wood should be preserved as it is a tangible part of history, an evidence of the 37 years that the planks were subjected to weathering. If I were to remove all of the weathered  surface, this wood would be no different from any chengal/balau planks.

With that in mind, I decided that by creating a contrast by keeping the weathered surface on the top surface while exposing the unweathered wood within on the other sides, the preciousness of the weathered surface of the wood would become more pronounced.

This bench is constructed by stacking layers of wooden planks and put together with wood adhesive.
