be.LIGHT, natural light profiles for a happier healthier life.
- Being exposed to natural light over the course of the day is important for setting our body’s internal clock. In the modern age of a 24hour society and bright lighting fixtures, the body is bombarded with mixed messages about what time of day it is. be.LIGHT proposes a lighting system, which collects data from your body and the environment and interprets it to give the user an idealised light exposure over the course of 24 hours.
As the system becomes more intelligent and personalized with use, it can aide in recalibrating the body clock when it’s out of sync, as in preparing for an early wake up or helping recover from jet lag.
The system comprises of a wearable acceleration and light sensor, a light fixture or fixtures and a display in the form of wrist screen or smart phone. The data collected is not only used to control the lighting environment but can be displayed to inform and educate about the implications of body rhythms and user lifestyle.The outputs for the project include a set of educational graphics used to inform the user about their circadian rhythm. These would be viewed on the be.LIGHT website as well as on smart phones. The physical outputs consisted of a Wearable Sensor, a Portable LED Lamp, and a LED Tripod Lamp.
- be.LIGHT SystemThe be.LIGHT system consists of a series of products designed to interact with each other providing a personalized lighting environment. The user wears a sensor which measures their circadian rhythm. A series of lamps were designed to play a lighting profile based of the user's circadian rhythm and the environment.
- be.LIGHT SensorThe wearable sensor is able to estimate where the user is within their circadian rhythm by measuring their activity levels and light exposure. The sensor comprises of an accelerometer, light sensor, and data collection. We constructed both a working prototype and aesthetic model. There are multiple choices in how the user wears and applies "snap-on" accessories skins to customise the sensor with the user's style.
- be.LIGHT Portable LED Lamp
The Portable LED Lamp was designed as a lamp within the be.LIGHT system that you can take with you on the go. The lamp can hang flat on the wall or roll to freely stand on your desk or bedside table. Using LED strips the lamp can produce an output reaching levels well above standard indoor lighting. A warmer LED color was chosen as it is easier to look at.
- be.LIGHT Tripod Lamp
This lamp was designed as part of the be.LIGHT project to represent the be.LIGHT system expanding into the typical lighting fixtures found in your home. We wanted to have a bit of fun with the design, so we created a table lamp on a telescoping tripod, which allows you to position the light to suit your desired circadian profile. During the exhibition, the lamp was playing a typical daily profile, using Arduino and Processing.
