Zoanthid - Final Collection

Zoanthid
Fashion Ba (hons); Final Collection
My collection is entitled "Zoanthid", which is a reference to my inspiration of coral reefs. I was inspired by the movement of coral underneath the water and it's fluidity which evokes an ethereal and feminine character. I developed my prints from photos that I had taken of corals and I manipulated these into digital prints, which directly show the movement and ethereal qualities of coral colonies. I used fluid fabrics such as japanese silk crepe-de- chine, cambric cotton, italian silk/cotton shirtings and Super 120's cotton suitings. Fabric was extremely important in the process of designing and I wanted to use my inspiration from corals but work with the fabric to show it off to its' fullest potential. I travelled to Dubai to source all my fabrics and I managed to get the highest quality fabrics available. I also worked with a tailor in Dubai to create my tailored pieces, although I manufactured everything else. I think it's important to nurture the skill and culture of tailors as it's a dying art that is so important to contemporary fashion.
I have a strong personal interest in tailoring and I created my silhouettes from a deconstructed 1930's mens tailored jacket, I wanted to created a tailored and flowing collection for a contemporary woman who enjoys quirky yet grown-up fashion. In a sense my collection is an antidote to the body conscious image of today; it's a collection for women with a laissez-faire and positive approach to life.
