Die Lage im Stadtgefüge
Der neu konzipierte Bahnhofsplatz wird geprägt durch seine klare räumliche Fassung. Die umgebende Bebauung definiert dabei eine dreiseitig begrenzte Platzfläche, auf der 3 für die Stadt Esslingen wichtige Solitärgebäude, das historische Bahnhofsgebäude, das Wohn- und Geschäftshaus Fleischmannstraße 1 und das Gebäude Bahnhofsstraße 1 frei positioniert sind. Zum Neckar und zu den beiden wichtigen Verkehrssystemen, der Bahnlinie und der Bundesstraße, öffnet und präsentiert sich die Stadt. Dem Bahnhofsplatz mit seinen Bauten kommt dadurch die Funktion eines Stadttors als Eingang zur hist. Altstadt zu. Das neue Bahnhofsdach soll diese Aufgabe stärken und im Kontext der historischen Gebäude ein Zeichen der wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Bedeutung Esslingens als zukunftsorientierte Region geben.
Um die klare städtebauliche Situation durch ein weiteres Element nicht zu stören, soll das neue Busbahnhofsdach zusammen mit dem bestehenden Bahnhofsgebäude eine Einheit bilden. Alle Busbahnhofhaltestellen können somit überdacht werden, wodurch für den Fahrgast und Passanten größtmöglicher Komfort entsteht.
Die Dachmodelierung
Die Dachflächenstruktur ist ein wesentliches Element. Durch die Tallage Esslingens ist das Dach neben der normalen Erlebbarkeit aus der Fußgängerperspektive vor allem auch von den Hanglagen von oben aus zu sehen. Die Dachlandschaft spielt allgemein in Esslingen eine wichtige stadtbildprägende Rolle.
Die Struktur wird deshalb aus dem Ort abgeleitet um ein signifikantes Bild zu erzeugen. Eine ebene Fläche wird mittels Verformung der Ränder und Einschnitte zu einer dreidimensionalen Oberflächenstruktur transformiert. Transparent eingedeckte linsenförmige Hyparschalen richten sich in der horizontalen parallel zur Fließrichtung des Neckars aus. In der vertikalen Querrichtung entsteht eine in Richtung Innenstadt sich öffnende Bogenstruktur der Schalen, die das „ Tor zur Stadt“ symbolisieren sollen. Die Bögen geben den Blick frei in Richtung Panorama Zollberg und in Richtung Weinberge der auslaufenden Neckarhalde gegenüber. Durch die gewählte Materialität entsteht eine filigrane lichtdurchlässige Haut die aus leichten Membranen erzeugt wird. Den angrenzenden Gebäuden wird dadurch trotz des direkten Dachanschlusses genügend „Raum“ gelassen. Die Dachfläche wird gestützt durch aufgespreizte Stützen, die den Raum zwischen Boden und Dach gestaltprägend bestimmen.
Der Bahnhofsplatz
Analog zur Dachfläche wird die Platzfläche aus dem gleichen Konzept heraus entwickelt. Aus dem steinernen „Teppich“ werden alle erforderlichen Möbel und Stadtobjekte herausmodelliert. Es entsteht eine auf das wesentliche reduzierte Außenraumgestaltung weitgehend ohne additive Elemente Die Bänke sind z.B. aus Stein geformte Kuben. Als Gliederung der freien Platzfläche wird ein in der Größe angemessener ebenengleicher Wasserspiegel mit integriertem Fontänenspiel vorgeschlagen.
