Since April 2010 I've been working on what was until recently known as 'Project Canvas'. Now it's been launched to the world as YouView, with a website and preview film both featuring words by yours truly.
YouView is a revolutionary new TV platform, developed by a partnership of big names: the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva. It combines the digital channels of Freeview with the power of the Internet, bringing online catch-up services like iPlayer and 4oD direct to your TV.
That means your YouView programme guide won't just show you what's on now or later. It'll also let you go backwards, and watch things that were on yesterday, or even last week. Instantly. On your normal TV. It's brilliant.
The broadband connection means there will also be a host of on-demand TV and film channels. And, as things develop, specially created YouView apps, just like apps on smartphones. So you'll be able to use your TV in all sorts of new ways.
The set-top boxes themselves will be coming out next year. Meanwhile, I'm continuing to work with both the marketing team and the UX (user experience) designers to give YouView a consistent tone of voice across what will become a growing number of touchpoints. As you can imagine, it's a thrilling thing to be part of, and I'm rather proud to be involved. I'll post more work here as it's released.
