You Are Here is a stackable chair designed for New York City’s Battery Park Draw Up a Chair competition.
The ‘You Are Here Chair’ repurposes the map of Manhattan, unfolding into a space for repose within the island’s active streetscape. The map is both an index and a symbol, helping New Yorkers locate themselves within the irregular collage of streets that surround Battery Park and superimposing Manhattan’s trademark subway lines onto street level.
The chair will be cast out of 100% post-consumer plastic, an economically and sustainably minded solution. In an inversion of the physical world, the lines of the Manhattan street map will be embossed into the surface while the color subway lines will be printed above. The map key becomes an armrest, complete with a panel for inscribing donor names and a plate that holds the RFID security tag.
For the city obsessed with itself, a chair obsessed with the city.
