Sculputre, Interactive piece
The title of the work is Woven Mundi and it is a sculptural and performative piece. It is a Maypole eight feet high with twelve ribbons hanging from the top at a length of four yards and two and a half inches wide. The ribbons are silk screened with text re-typed from news media articles, originally printed between December 2010, till December 2011. This plastic pole adjusts on a concrete white base with a wooden frame. The piece can be disassembled in order to be moved easily, since it is not a sight specific piece.
More specifically, the issues discussed on the fabric are concerned with our worlds current situation, politically and economically, as well as other problems we are facing, i.e. earthquakes, radiation leaks, AIDS, etc. The font being used is Times, in order to make it look more like a newspaper, followed by the related images. Its appearance is chaos of media and problems bombarding us, hanging from the top of the pole, and all together composing a Maypole, that can be read as a timeline of the previous year's events. In one event the pole stood in Union Square, having a staged performance, with twelve people, six women and six men. The point of the performance was to make clear and celebrate theideas of suffering and misery that have interfered in our lives. The context needed to be worldwide in
order to "respond" to everyone.
