In late 2007, I had the opportunity to work on a book that was way out of my comfort zone...and that book was World of Darkness Innocents. It dealt with playing as kids in the horror genre and that meant the art and design couldn't be as gruesome as the stuff you would usually see in World of Darkness. The flip side of that is that it couldn't be too "kiddie" or "cute" which so many books dealing with children often wind up being.
So, my first thoughts of a horror movies where kids/young teens were strong protagonists was the classic "Salem's Lot" from the late 70s. As a kid around 8-9 years old, it scared the bejeezus out of me, but it I was fascinated by Lance Kerwin's character, David Petrie...who went from screaming kid to a battle hardened vampire hunter by the end of the show. And with that character in mind, I wanted all the kids in WoD Innocents to be in that mid range...still terrified but not victims....still kids but not utterly helpless.
