In order to create some interest in Boomerang Media's postcard network, I created a set of seven 'World Cup Heroes' postcards to coincide with the huge anticipation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The postcards were released in stages into Boomerang postcard racks in cinemas, health clubs and universities across the UK. The illustrations of some of the key players took on an intense medieval vibe as during the build up I saw them as a collection of warriors preparing to do battle on the world stage.
It turns out that my careful selection process was blown out of the water as none of these 'heroes' performed to their true potential during the tournament. Then again, it would have been a pretty strange set of pre-tournament cards that consisted of Diego Forlan, Thomas Müller, Asamoah Gyan and Paul the Psychic Octopus.
The cards proved to be very popular, with people desperate to collect all seven cards, and sets (of these free cards) ended up being sold for up to five pounds on trading sites such as ebay. The cards were also showcased on Creative Review's website.
