Working for Rizco Design, I recently had the privilege of working with HDSA and The Woody Guthrie Foundation to establish marketing materials, advertisements, posters and t-shirts for their benefit concert, This Land Was Made for You and Me, held in New York City’s Irving Plaza. The concert featured artists Johnatha Brooke, Red Molly, Akron/Family, Mike+Ruthy, Demolition String Band, Hope Machine, Lowry Hamner, and Outernational. Good music and a good cause as people joined in fundraising, building awareness for Huntington’s Disease and celebrating the music of Woody Guthrie.

From a design standpoint the highlight of the project was having the opportunity to visit the Woody Guthrie Foundation and delve into Woody’s historical records that include his art, music and books which aiding as inspiration for the upcoming concert and establish a unique tone. The goal was to establish an organic representation of Woody Guthrie and tie it to the theme of the event. As a result, screen printing on craft paper was utilized on the posters to create an organic, gritty, and raw look and feel to establish the visual voice of the concert.

Woody Guthrie’s inspiring career in folk music — along with his personal battle with Huntington’s Disease — have led to an inspiring story. A story that led to dedicated people in both HDSA, Huntington’s Disease Society of America, and the Woody Guthrie Foundation, to champion for the rich history of a talented individual as well as a devastating disease that affected Woody and the many other families with HD.
