The DRS requires an annual financial report each yearto offer an investment summary and financial statement to its members, and to update themon plan provisions and pension systems. The goal was to not only deliver thepertinent information but to begin introducing a message regarding the personal careand attention required for a well considered retirement. The task wasto make finances approachable, so that members would spend a bit of time considering what may be perceived as an unwelcome subject partnered with copious amounts of numbers and figures.
The first order of business was reworking the charts andgraphs. Pulling from many emerging infographic sources, all pie charts werethrown in the bin and replaced with varying meters that made use of harmoniouscolor palettes. The next step was messaging to lifestyle through photos, the director’smessage and copy. The result was an improved financial report that drewfavorable comments from members for its ease-of-read.
In 2007, the strategy was once again reviewed as the nextreport’s figures were in. Building upon a good start but wanting to be spot on,we decided to keep the chart, warm the color palette and introduce a concept. The concept was "growth" and pushed the strategy of personal care and attention tothe forefront by using unexpected imagery to communicate a financial theme ofinvestment. Finally, the piece utilized all the communications tacticsavailable to it as it became strategic in nature.
TheDirector of Communications, Dawn Gothro, was a true client-partner and guided the work through the organization for all goals to be met.

A retirement strategy fund brochure that made use of the strategic approach and color palettes that had proven so successful with membership. (Yes, a pie chart was reintroduced -- sometimes a pie just fits, particularly if there's only one slice and it's a nice size!)
