14" x 11"
Charcoal
Completed February 17, 2013
Work in progress
For all my drawings, I start out with a pencil outline to make sure everything is in the right location. Then I start layering on the charcoal.
For most portraits, I use a mixture of charcoal pencil and square charcoal drawing sticks. For the shading on Walter's portrait, I used Q-tips, napkins and a small blending stick. I also used my best friend, an eraser pencil, for highlights and Walter's hair. I don't know how I ever survived without an eraser pencil!
I intended to keep track of how long this drawing took me, because people ask me that question all the time. I think this one took me the longest of any of my drawings; I estimate around 15 hours.
