W. Stephen Saunders Photography website
- For more than 30 years Steve Saunders has been travelling the world, mostly in solitude, trying to capture the quintessential image on paper. He primarily shoots landscapes, in the style of greats like Ansel Adams and John Sexton. Occassionally he will shoot architectural photos too. Some of his work is even part of the permanent collections at the Art Institute of Chicago.
I looked to Steve’s work to inspire the design layout. Wanting his work to be the main focus, a simple two-column layout is used in every section with the Portfolio section opting for a wider right column in order to accommodate images in larger formats.
Homepage
The homepage for the site is pictured here. It introduces the viewer to his work through his Artist’s Statement and a sample of his style.
This is a page from the Portfolio section where Steve’s work is the star. The gray background color forces the black and white in each of the photos to pop. Photos are arranged in numbered galleries since he has not organized them more specifically. Simple white arrows advance the photos within each gallery. More images will be added as Steve continues to scan negatives into a digital format.
The About section is shown here. This page contains a short biography, a downloadable copy of Steve’s curriculum vitae and a column for News articles, advertising Steve’s lastest projects and shows.
For his most recent show, I created a Flash slideshow of photos from the show setup, the gallery space and the opening reception. The static site needed some automated movement.
This is the Print section of the site where people can purchase any images found in the Portfolio section. One of the biggest challenges was to figure out a way for Steve to accept credit card payments through the site without having to work with a web developer. Paypal’s Invoicing feature was the easiest and most effective solution.
The Invoicing tool allows freelancers and artists to submit a digital invoice to a buyer via email. The buyer can then review their order and submit payment using a credit card, e-check or Paypal account. It is a great tool for beginners in e-Commerce.
