When I drew Voracious Foliage I had been thinking about many of the common misconceptions generally held about our relationship with the natural world.

Part of my thinking was jogged by some recent natural disasters. They had served as sharp reminders that, despite our feeling of mastery over our physical environment, our existence is still quite fragile and easily shaken in the face of earthquakes, tsunamis, climate change and other violent shifts of nature.

On a separate tangent, I had been watching many wildlife documentaries, and was fascinated by the state of constant struggle most organisms find themselves in for survival. I’ve always found it strange that the word “nature” generally evokes ideas of gentle balance and harmony, when truly mother nature is nothing if not perilous. - Jes
