Monument to Emily Georgiana, Lady Winchilsea
The effigy, in white Carrara marble, is reclining on a classical day-bed. She wears a loose robe and is holding a scroll of paper on which reads: 'I AM HAPPY INDEED HAPPY IN THE WORD GOD IS WAITING FOR ME.' The bed is raised upon a high marble base. Inscribed, signed and dated.
Eve listening to the voice
This figure depicts Eve listening to the voice of Satan in the Garden of Eden, a subject probably inspired by John Milton's religious epic poem Paradise Lost (1667); the composition is related to a classical sculpture in the Louvre, Paris, of a Nymph with a shell.
Maternal Affection
The mother, a Venus-like nude, with drapery over her lap, sits on a rectangular block, the right leg crossed under the left. bending forward and twisting to the left, she turns her head to the left and is about to kiss a child, who clambers up her back.
The Artist's Daughter
The subject of this enigmatic portrait is probably Constance, a daughter of the sculptor. A relief described as '"Constance" medallion' was exhibited by the sculptor at the Royal Academy in 1872. This work had been in the Westmacott family since it was made and was donated by the daughter of the sitter. James Sherwood Westmacott (1823 - 1900) was a member of the Westmacott dynasty of sculptors active in the late 18th and early 19th century, and carved several reliefs in this distinctive style. He was the son of the sculptor Henry Westmacott. Among his chief works are a 'Victory' statue at Dresden and a statue of 'Peri' and of 'Alfred the Great'.
