Valdivia Film Festival is an
independent film festival held in a southern city surrounded by lakes,
exuberant vegetation, wildlife and rainy weather that all together give the
festival a unique feeling and identity.
Filmmakers from all over the world
come down to attend screenings, participate in talks and cultivate prospects
for future productions. Naturals from Valdivia have become more and more
involved with the festival and every year attracts more interest from the
community in general, transforming the city with this vibrant event.
The concept that organizers coined
for this year was based in all of the previous features mentioned above, using
the claim “Único en su especie” (One of a kind). The organizers wanted a
few key communication pieces
designed around this theme.
I decided to use the double
meaning in spanish for the word “species” or “kind”. This word means both an element from the
natural world as an animal or a plant and also some kind of phenomena. I
developed the design around the concept of what would be Valdivia´s "species": a local kind of
deer (pudú), a girl with an umbrella, a film canister, and a steady cam. Their uniqueness
is expressed by the graphical expression they assume: the pudú and girl are
rendered with film canisters while the camera and film canister are rendered as
if they were made out of leaves and vegetation.
