Urban electric public vehicle CRISTAL

CRISTAL
new urban mobility

The Cristal is a compact vehicle (about 3 meters long), with a 6 person capacity, electric, noiseless, that can run equally well in manual driving mode (self-service mode) or as a convoy of vehicles remote controlled by the local operator. It is designed to adjust, without any interruptions, the individual or semi-collective transportation offer to the changing demand of urban centres.

- Operation in self-service mode Private driver: the Cristal system operates as a pool of vehicles available at all times and any places within a defined perimeter. It answers a punctual, momentary requirement, scattered over space and time. It is a transportation system that supplements other existing transportation modes. The set-up of Cristal stations shall be defined by specific territorial studies. The user, having pre-registered with the system operator, may check into the pool availability and make a reservation for a vehicle at the station he wants. When he gets on the vehicle, the vehicle will be configured in ´self-serviceª mode, providing access to the dashboard and applying the highway traffic act (for example, compulsory wearing of seatbelt). At the end of the trip, the user hands over the vehicle to the target station.
- Operation in convoy mode Professional driver reporting to the system operator: the Cristal system is the answer to a scheduled travel request (event, specific type of service), temporarily concentrated within time and space (school transport service, museum tour, etc). It provides the possibility to adjust its capacity by means of vehicle coupling according to the real demand. The driver selects the number of cars composing his convoy before leaving the station. In the convoy mode, the dashboards other than the one of the first vehicle are not accessible to passengers ; the vehicle is considered as a public transportation mode. The convoy mode also enables vehicle return and therefore equal redistribution of the vehicles pool over the overall stations.

The breakthrough represented by Cristal therefore consists in proposing via this unit of individual or semi-collective mobility, a complete offer in terms of public transports, operated by the same system manager as the one of the already existing overall public transportation network. Cristal enables to meet the needs of passengers within their individual chain of urban mobility. The integration of innovating technologies (ubiquitous information systems, platooning, computer-assisted tourism), supplements this new mobility offer.
