- Urban Oasis Seating
Third year proposal project
- The Urban Oasis concept was inspired by the recent drive for more environmentally conscious cities, by the reclamation of public and private spaces for planted projects. The aim of this work has been to create a flexible and portable unit that would bring greenery back into environments of any size, in a decorative and functional way. As such, these planted units have been designed to serve as decorative seating solutions, where users can benefit from the positive mental and physical effects of interaction with nature where not normally possible.
- When used in the built-up environment, the sensory appeal of scent colour and texture are in striking contrast to the surroundings and encourage interaction and curiosity. This invitation is extended by the use of an ergonomic dimple on top of each Oasis, designed to accommodate sitting. By using an Oasis as a place of rest or discovery, users can benefit from this unusual interactive experience.
Alternatively this aspect of display and discovery can be developed into community gardening or farming projects for smaller scale environments. With flexible planting space and volume, units could be used to cultivate shard fruit, herb or flower displays.
- In order to promote the use of and concept behind Oasis installations, a living billboard campaign has been designed for more commercial areas. A custom matrix typeface has been designed to emulate the typographic language of the city. This forms the template for an 8 week typographic planting display that grows into an expression of Urban Oasis quest for the reintegration of nature to the built environment.
