Hoping to capitalize on the burgeoning American automobile market, French manufacturer Michelin chose Milltown NJ for its first American tire factory and purchased the plant in 1907 from the International Rubber Company. But after suffering through a collapsed economy through the great depression, Michelin closed the facility in 1930 and moved back to France. The abandoned plant has been vacant ever since and is currently in danger of being demolished; replaced with affordable apartments.
Transitions is an observation of an industrialized past, current reality and represents a growing future. These mammoth structures that appear to be decayed yet frozen in time from the Second Industrial Revolution fascinate me. By photographing this space, I attempt to provide a visual record of a forgotten era of Americas past before it transitions and is lost forever.
