Tokyo Design Study

  • Shinjuku Financial District: Tokyo
    Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan
  • During the summer of 2009, I travelled to Tokyo, Japan, to study architecture for 2 months. During my 6 week stay in tokyo, I was to complete a study of the downtown financial district known as
Shinjuku. The main 9 block system of shinjuku consists of highrise buildings such as
hotels, civic plazas, legislature buildings (Designed by Kenzo Tange),and office buildings. The issue that
arose was that there were no floor-plans available so it became necesary to goto each building and create a floorplan from scratch.  The first drawing is the Documentation Drawing which depicts
the intertwining street system and the 200ft floor plan of all the highrises. The second image depicts the first drawing as an artistic interpretation from the viewpoint of a Japanese god sitting in the clouds
above. These specific clouds were chosen from a number of different examples in traditional Japanese art.
