This was a collaboration project between me and student photographer Louise Norris. The aim was to make a book to display images of a landscape project. The images where made up of 3 connecting photos that joined together to make a complete landscape. The images where taken with a disposable camera as the project was experimental in nature and the images feature scenes from Ripon and Harrogate, in North Yorkshire and Birmingham City centre. The images are a set of 20; 10 taken in the countryside in the day and 10 in the city at night, which introduced the concept of contrast to the project. Louise also felt there was an observation quality to the collection, capturing a moment in time hence the project name 'Time Pieces'
I decided to split the images up into a series of 10 'notebook' style books, 2 images per book. The note books where then designed to look like the 'Field Notes' note book or ration book. This treatment made reference to observational note-taking but also it gave the work a dated feel which fit in with the dated technology of disposable photography. The small size of each note book evokes the idea something collectable and something to treasure. With only 2 images per book me and Louise felt that the images would be appreciated as individual pictures and as a whole within the collection.
The collection has been colour coded with the lighter more vibrant colours containing the first 10 images (daytime, country) and the darker, mellow colours for the ramianing 10 images that were taken at night. The project description is printed on the inside cover of each note book and again in keeping with the note-book style. The main titles are set in Futura Bold and the subheadings and captions are set in American Typewriter. The whole set is bound together with a glossy card sheath that again contains the project details set in Future Bold.
