NLK Domostroenie – а company building premium class country houses exclusively of glulam – announced a contest for architects and designers for the project of the office building and show room which shall be located on the territory of Art-Play design center. The key point of brief was that the house should be located on the roof of the already existing one-floor technical building (former bomb shelter entrance). This imposed a challenging number of limits in terms of the area of housing, materials used and the very construction of building.
Designing the architecture of the building we aimed to express the company profile through the shape as much as possible. As the company uses the glulam for constructing, taking the typical shape of the glulam timber cross section for the elevation was considered to be the best solution. The idea of naturalness and ‘woodiness’ is supported also by using glulam as the main material. Combination of the panoramic windows and timber-frame makes a light elegant construction appealing to the best examples of the contemporary American architecture.
One of the project features is to link the house with the existing surrounding and consider a number of limits. As a result, building does not conflict with the bomb shelter and at the same time looks like a futuristic object as compared with other buildings of the Art-Play space. Thus all the visitors will inevitably turn their eyes towards it.
Because of its dimensions and construction building is easy transportable via railroad in assembled state.
Building has two floors where the show room and office of the interior studio (1 st floor) and the show room and NLK Domostroenie office (2 nd floor) are located. The inner space is designed in such way that visiting show rooms clients do not enter any office zone. The daylight goes through large panoramic windows – this enables to use electricity reasonably. The outdoor stairs leads to the entrance porch located on the roof of the bomb shelter.
