Tibor Kalman / System Of A Down CD Packaging

  • Tibor Kalman /
    System Of A Down

    CD Packaging
  • This project is an attempt to create packaging for an existing album in the style of a researched designer. Tibor Kalman's loose style, which often resulted in "ugly" work, gave me quite a bit of freedom to experiment. I trashed a lot of personal rules on this design, exchanging them for one-shot sketches and quick gut layout decisions. This was a mold-breaker for me; it expanded my ability to judge and create through emotion and intuition as well as through design principles.
  • The title of the album is "Steal This Album." +10 pts. if you get this joke on the back cover.
  • Look, there's one on the front cover, too.
  • As a hobby, I enjoy handing this board book to friends and loved ones so I can watch their facial
contortions after removing the belly band.
  • All photographs and most illustrations were shamelessly hijacked from an old radio hobby
catalogue (flip side) and a set of childrens' encyclopedias.
  • If one was to closely examine the type, one might find that I used in excess of 10 typefaces from
different families on this one single project. I won't tell Mr. Vignelli if you don't.
  • Most of the blue pen marks are from a frustrated young person who clearly did not approve of
what the encyclopedia presented. It worked great for me. I used it to describe the childish habits
    of our planet's leadership.
