For the Design Narrative module It was decided to tell the classic children’s story of ‘The princess and the pea’ written by Hans Christian Andersen using my illustrative design skills. This involved using a number of tools such as sketches using pen and pencil; vector imagery generated using Adobe Illustrator then introducing texture and pattern through Adobe Photoshop.
I was made Aware of the ‘‘typical’’ original illustrations associated with ‘The princess and the pea’’ therefore I approached the visuals using an interesting twist. This story was illustrated as if it were two young girls playing dress up, acting as the prince and the princess rather than visuals that demonstrate a literal understanding
of the story.
The illustration style used for this book uses vintage styles and textures in a modern perspective. I felt it was necessary to use rich and vibrant colours in the illustrations that would correspond with the illustration style but also appeal to the target audience of children aged three to seven years old.
The typeface used throughout this book is Monbijoux. I felt this hand rendered appearing typeface would be appropriate as it gives a olden and traditional yet contemporary look and feel. Read Less
