The flora of Pischelsdorf w/ Lukas Frankenberger

Together with Lukas Frankenberger I had the possibility to paint this house in Pischelsdorf (Eastern Styria)!

The focus of the work lies on the biodiversity of the region and is a part of an ongoing project of K.U.L.M.  (www.kulm.net).

In the 1970ies some regional biologists wrote a book about the plants of the region around Pischelsdorf, a small town in eastern Styria. They listed all the plants and wrote down where they were found.
We used that book as the base for our work:

We painted the rivers of the region onto the walls to create some kind of a map. For easier orientation we also integrated the highway B54. Instead of all the towns in the surrounding we picked various plants which grow at each certain spot an wrote down their names in latin and german instead of the names of the towns.

After that we decided to paint huge wasps onto the walls – they are also important for the biodiversity and for the plants in the region. Many people asked us why we didn´t paint bees, but to be honest: wasps are way cooler and prettier – besides that the wasp is much more like a human. If they don´t find plants with nectar they take the easy way and steal your food ;)
Another big part of the paining is a hand with a cotton bud – cotton buds or brushes are often used to pollinate flowers by hand.
