The Swimmer. Leander and Hero, greek myth

The story goes, Leander and Hero were lovers conducting a secret affair.

Hero lived in Sestus and Leander lived in Abydus. These two cities were sepearted by a strait of water called the Hellespont.

Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite and lived alone at the will of her parents in a high tower on the edge the Hellespoint. She would light a lamp every night and turn her tower into a lighthouse, to guide Leander to her, as he swam across the Hellespot to be with his love. Just before dawn he would swim back to Abydus.

The affair continued throughout the summer but one winter night a storm blew up as Leander was crossing the Hellespont. Hero's lamp was blown out and he lost his way. Tragically, he died.

In the moring Hero saw his body washed up below her tower and in true greek myth style, filled with grief she pitched herself out the window and fell to her death.
