The Plantation is a house that I designed for a subdivision in Cobourg called New Amherst. The builder hired me to come up with a house that would fit on a 40 foot wide lot with the width of the house being only 25 feet wide with 3 bedrooms, the masterbedroom was to have a walk-in closet and an ensuite bath, a living room, dining room, family room, kitchen, a mud room , laundry on the main floor and a powder room. This was quite the challenge as it was 2 storeys with a basement. The stairs alone took several hours to get right. My approach was from the inside out. I am an interior designer (intern) and therefore thought first of the the furniture layout and the path a person is to take. I then took into consideration the slopes of different parcels of land and created a floor plan that was able to be "stepped down" in places so that to enter the house or garage there amount of steps was limited. The original design had many more achitectural details to it but since this was not a custom home these details became obsolete to be perhaps ressurected with a purchaser with a love for detail. This experience was wonderful and I am in the process of designing more houses.
