"The Painted Wolf" African wild dog part 2

Wild dogs ( Lycao pictus) are critically endangered. This beautiful creature suffers from habitat loss, diseases and poaching, all due to human pressure. In fact the wild dogs do travel over very big distances and often comes near farming grounds where they can catch diseases from domestic dogs and/or be killed by the farmers as they may prey upon livestock.

Furthermore the wild dogs are too often portrayed as bloody and cruel animals owing to their killing technique: they do not suffocate their prey (unlike cats) but rather tear it apart as soon as contact is made. More graphic killing form yet more effective and quicker than the suffocvation. It takes less than a minute for their prey to die because ofthe blood loss and shock from the wounds.

Wild dogs are highly social animals and each pack is ruled by a dominant alpha pair. The other members of the pack will assist in hunting, caring for the wounded and help raising the pups.

The following serie is from the resident pack of the Khwai area. It is the same pack as from my previous "the painted Wolf" gallery. The alpha female was killed by a leopard and 1 of the pups was killed by a crocodile as it was crossing the river. The pack is now only 10 but they are strong and healthy, and the remaining pups cuter than ever...
