- 'THE OUTSIDERS' OPENING TITLES
This is my proposed solution to a Type Studio 2 class assignment at SCAD from the Winter 2009 Quarter. The assignment was to pick a movie whose opening title sequence needed a bit of improvement. Then, using Adobe After Effects, we were to design a more successful version of that title sequence. Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation of the S.E. Hinton novel 'The Outsiders' has always been one of my favorite movies (possibly even a guilty pleasure). However, the opening titles (though set to a Stevie Wonder song) are absolutely abysmal.
This was my first foray into After Effects. My goal here was to make the film seem a little "tougher," if you will. I used The Standells 'Sometimes the Good Guys Don't Wear White' as the opening song and basis for the concept of the video, which attempted to paint a portrait of sorts of the 'greasers' through their clothes and style (which was such a memorable aspect of the film). I added a bit of film grain and projector dust spots to give a subtle nod to the drive-ins and theaters of the time. Stay gold, Ponyboy. Type Studio II, Winter 2009
