Located near the top of Bree Street, The Odyssey is the, self-proclaimed, “first gastropub in Cape Town”. The name ties into Cape Town’s history as a stopover port for weary sea travelers and the founders were looking for a nautical themed logo and identity to further communicate this. The use of nautical imagery is a little cliched in current “hipster” design trends so we encouraged the client to take the hand-lettered approach.
As the concept of a gastropub isn’t well defined to South Africans, we wanted to use the coasters as an opportunity introduce casual drinking patrons some of the bespoke dishes available.
Initialy we pitched laser etched wooden coasters to the client but they decided not to pursue this due to budget constraints
We used a combination of patent drawings from the 1800’s alongside hand rendered type of sailor jargon and various calls to action
We illustrated intricate black & white illustrations of shipyards and train stations to be used as large vinyl stickers on the front windows to the venue. Read Less
