The New York Times Magazine is the Sunday supplement of the world renowned newspaper, The New York Times. Each video on their website is preceded by an animated short, and with the motion branding needing a fresh lick of paint they were brave enough to throw the job to an unknown designer from Montreal. Brave for them, lucky for me.
Within the animation the reverse of each letter features a different colour of paper to represent the variety of subjects covered by the magazine, whilst the use of paper itself is tied to the notion that when even in digital format the video’s content is connected to printed matter. The animation closes in the magazine’s traditional monochrome colour scheme, a nod towards the more formal body of work they produce.
Hours were spent calculating how to make the letters unravel in a fluid movement; the repeat commission two years down the line would indicate these were hours well spent.
